Humanity in Action Fellowship in Detroit

When: July 10 – August 5, 2018

Where: Detroit, Michigan, USA

Who's eligible: Young professionals and university students from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine and the U.S. U.S. Senior Fellows are also eligible to apply.

The Humanity in Action Detroit Fellowship is a new Humanity in Action Fellowship program in Detroit, Michigan. Humanity in Action brings together a group of 22 American and European emerging leaders – focusing particularly on students from the Detroit-area and the state of Michigan – for an intensive program that examines the promise, failure and possibilities of social and economic progress in Detroit.

The program explores the biography of Detroit — a city deeply emblematic of the tensions of massive economic and cultural change in 20th and 21st century America. The program places special emphasis on democratic inclusion of marginalized groups, equitable development, social entrepreneurship and public health. Humanity in Action tasks the Fellows with challenging their own assumptions about race, class, development, health and equity among other fundamental issues. The Detroit Fellowship builds upon the model the Humanity in Action developed for the Philanthropy and Social Enterprise Fellowship, which took place in Detroit in 2015.

The Detroit Fellowship joins Humanity in Action's John Lewis Fellowship in Atlanta as the second U.S.-based annual program, along with our annual European programs in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Sarajevo and Warsaw

Graphic Design

The program’s graphic design depicts the Monument to Joe Louis (1986), also known as The Fist. The monument represents the fight that boxer Joe Louis won against German boxer Max Schmelling in 1938 – a moral victory against Nazism. Louis, a Detroiter, also fought tirelessly against Jim Crow laws and racial injustice. Commissioned by Sports Illustrated magazine, the sculpture was designed by Mexican-American sculptor Robert Graham. It sits near Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit. To Humanity in Action, The Fist represents brave resistance to injustice.
